In Vreemde vogels op Schiphol staan foto’s centraal van bijzondere

vliegtuigen die Schiphol door de jaren heen hebben bezocht.

Voor het eerst wordt er aandacht besteed aan een ‘vergeten’ groep vliegers van

de Marine Luchtvaartdienst (MLD). Op 1 juli 1942 werd het MLD-detachement

omgevormd tot ‘321 (Dutch) squadron’ en overgeplaatst naar China Bay.

De Nederlanders waren gestationeerd op de Cocoseilanden, een eenzame

eilandengroep in de Indische Oceaan, ongeveer 700 kilometer ten zuidwesten

van Java.

Ordered by the Royal Navy in 1941 the destroyers of the 5th Emergency Flotilla became known as S-class and served as fleet and convoy escorts in World War II. The Van Amstel Class consists of six former U.S. Navy frigates that originally served as destroyer escorts for the Bostwick and Cannon classes. In 1950, these ships were loaned to the Royal Netherlands Navy as part of the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP).
