Het verhaal van de verbouwde DE2 begint in 1973 als NS plannen maakt voor het moderniseren van een aantal Blauwe Engelen (materieel Plan X). Tussen 1975 en 1981 kwamen 26 gele verbouwde tweewagenstellen op de baan. Pas in 1998 nam NS afscheid van de laatste verbouwde dieseltweetjes, maar daarmee was het verhaal nog niet ten einde.
