Met deze publicatie viert het Frans Masereel Centrum te Kasterlee haar vijftigste verjaardag. Sinds de statutaire oprichting in 1972 is het Centrum, genoemd naar de Belgische graficus, houtsnijder, kunstschilder, tekenaar en pacifist Frans Masereel, uitgegroeid tot een van de meest uitdagende en inspirerende omgevingen voor kunstenaars en curatoren om grafiek en printed matter-at-large te onderzoeken.

Op basis van extensief archiefonderzoek schetst Diepdruk - vlakdruk - hoogdruk -doordruk een rijk historisch portret van deze internationaal gerenom­meerde residentie- en tentoonstellingsruimte in Kasterlee. In zes hoofdstukken en evenveel decennia wordt de lezer doorheen de geschiedenis van het Centrum geleid, waarbij bewust de spanning tussen de densiteit van de chronologische ordening enerzijds en de selectieve bespreking van feiten en protagonisten anderzijds wordt opgezocht. Het boek start in 1962, het jaar waarin Turnhoutenaar Fons Mertens drukpersen begint te verzamelen die de basis vormen van de technische uitrusting van het latere Frans Masereel Centrum.
