Het boek volgt Mondriaan op zijn artistieke reis vanuit Nederland naar het bruisende Parijs van de jaren 1920 en 1930 en uiteindelijk naar New York, waar hij in 1944 zou overlijden. Iconisch zijn Mondriaans ateliers – met hun witgeschilderde muren en kunstig aangebrachte kleurvlakken zelf bijna kunstwerken. De vele foto’s ervan, vaak door beroemde fotografen, zijn net zo fascinerend als die van de gasten die Mondriaan er ontvangt, eveneens vaak beroemde kunstenaars.
