Brita Bakema groeide in haar jeugd op te midden van architecten en beeldende kunstenaars. Zelf kreeg zij schilderles van Karel Appel in Parijs en Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg en ontwikkelde zij een kleurrijke abstract-figuratieve stijl vol symboliek. Haar opleiding tot grafisch ontwerper volgde Brita aan de London School of Printing & Graphic Arts.
