De bedoeling was geld in te zamelen voor de strijd van de geallieerden tegen

de Duitsers. Na de oorlog maakte het een doorstart als fonds voor de cultuurfinanciering.

alle provincies en de drie grote steden Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Den Haag

kon het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds al snel duizenden culturele activiteiten
