In 1915 startte boekhandelaar Emanuel Querido zijn eigen uitgeverij. Hij gaf belangrijke schrijvers uit, had bijzondere aandacht voor de vormgeving en begon in 1933 Querido Verlag, waar werk verscheen van schrijvers die Hitler-Duitsland moesten ontvluchten.
