Sinds de uitvinding van de fotografie in 1839 zijn vrouwen actief als fotograaf, maar hun werk heeft tot nu toe veel minder aandacht gekregen dan dat van hun mannelijke collega’s. Uit de ruim 15 miljoen foto’s die bij het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag zijn opgeslagen, is voor Pioniers. Fotografie door vrouwen werk van 43 vrouwen geselecteerd uit de periode 1859–1999. Allen kunnen worden bestempeld als vernieuwer en hebben met hun werk de weg vrijgemaakt voor volgende generaties fotografen.

In Pioniers wordt aandacht besteed aan bekende en minder bekende fotografen uit Nederland en daarbuiten.
