This book reveals that James Ensor did not develop his fantastic and grotesque universe of masks and skeletons out of his melancholic soul, but that he re-used and transformed an old image tradition that was collected and published by the French author and art critic Jules Champfleury in his History of Caricature. Frans (1942-2015) en Marja (1941) de Boer Lichtveld bezochten in dezelfde tijd het Instituut voor Kunstnijverheids Onderwijs, de voorloper van de huidige Rietveldacademie in Amsterdam.

Aanvankelijk werkten zij als twee individuele kunstenaars. Niet veel later betrokken zij een voormalige school in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, waar zij een atelier deelden. Vanaf 1970 gingen zij nog een stap verder, zij werden een kunstenaarsduo en werkten voortaan samen aan dezelfde

projecten.
