Irrigating the Desert
Water Management, Agricultural Practices, and Social Complexity in Southern Turkmenistan during the Bronze Age
2025 || Paperback || Roberto Arciero || Leiden University Press
Ancient civilizations often developed near major rivers, like in Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Central Asia, the Murghab alluvial fan in southern Turkmenistan was central to the emergence of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC), also known as the Oxus Civilization, during the third and second millennia BCE. The local alluvial fan was central for the productive agriculture at the basis of the region's urban centers and the wealth that accumulated in these societies.

The Early and Middle Pleistocene Archaeological Record of Greece / druk 1
Current status and future prospects
2010 || Paperback || V. Tourloukis || Leiden University Press
By applying a fieldwork-based, geoarchaeological approach, Tourloukis examines in this study the evidence from Greece within the framework of the earliest occupation of Europe. Although the Greek Peninsula lies within a core area of early hominin movements between Africa and Europe but also within Eurasia itself, the Lower Palaeolithic record of Greece remains as yet extremely poor.
Choosing the scanty Greek record as a case-study, Tourloukis elaborates on a hitherto largely overlooked subjec...

Digging holes abroad / druk 1
an ethnography of Dutch archaeological research projects abroad
2012 || Paperback || Sjoerd van der Linde || Leiden University Press
Over the last few decades, western archaeology increasingly abandoned its 'ivory tower' in order to investigate, negotiate and develop its position and role in global society. The way in which we deal with other peoples views in the interpretation of archaeological materials, the way in which we integrate our narratives and practices with other heritage demands,and the way in which we deal with power differences in both these processes; all are challenging issues when undertaking archaeologic...

representing Japanese colonial 'Heritage' in Taiwan
2012 || Paperback || Min-Chin Chiang || Leiden University Press

Perceptions of the indigenous communities on their involvement and use of traditional conservation practices
|| Paperback || Simon Makuvaza || Leiden University Press
Since 1992, when the World Heritage Committee established its category of "cultural landscapes", scholarly debates have ensued on how they could best be managed. One approach, which appears to have gained significance over the past two decades or so, considers using traditional conservation practices as well as engaging local indigenous communities in the stewardship of these exemplary sites.
To examine the efficacy of this recent approach, this book explores the concept of indigenous communi...
