Rob van de Laar studeerde af in de Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde en werkte enkele jaren in de verzekeringsbranche.

Daarna was hij van 2000 tot 2014 werkzaam voor AM, vanaf 2007 als adjunct-hoofdredacteur. Sinds 2014 is hij actief als freelance journalist en tekstschrijver. Van de Laar stelt bovendien voor AM jaarlijks de top 100 met grootste intermediairbedrijven samen.
