In de overzichtswerken van de architectuurgeschiedenis worden de fundamentele veranderingen niet of nauwelijks behandeld. De architectuur wordt beschreven aan de hand van de bouwstijlen. Historische houtconstructies in Nederland

Het dak van oude Nederlandse boerderijen, schuren en vakwerkhuizen wordt gedragen door een houtconstructie. De gebouwen ontlenen hun sterkte aan een inwendig houtskelet: het gebintwerk. Zo'n constructie is opgebouwd uit zware houten raamwerken of gebinten, die meestal in dwarsrichting staan en gekoppeld worden door balken in langsrichting. Op dit gebintwerk rust het dak, dat ook zelf vaak weer uit dragende houten elementen is opgebouwd.
