Prachtige portretten van vooral jonge mensen, op hun mooist afgebeeld. Ze kijken je recht aan met grote donkere ogen en zijn vaak zo realistisch dat ze lijken te leven. Geen wonder dat mummieportretten zo tot de verbeelding spreken, al sinds ze omstreeks 1900 in grotere aantallen werden ontdekt. Wie waren deze mooie mensen? En wie waren de vaklieden die de portretten zo knap op houten paneeltjes schilderden? Hoe werkten ze en wie waren hun opdrachtgevers?
