De bijbel weersprak niet dat mensen tot slaaf konden worden gemaakt. De gereformeerde theologie van de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw gaf samen met rechtsgeleerdheid, verlichtingsfilosofie, politiek en maatschappelijk denken vorm aan de koloniale ideologie van de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden.
