Radicale 24

This book celebrates Radicale1924, a contemporary art residency founded in 2020 by Belgian choreographer Chantal Yzermans.

Located in the picturesque village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie in the Lot Valley in the south of France, the residency welcomed artists, researchers, and creators from 2021 to 2024 to live and work in the historic Maison Routier.

Carrying forward the village’s historical tradition as an artistic haven—once home to André and Elisa Breton and a circle of renowned surrealists in the 1950s—Radicale1924 became a dynamic site of creative exchange. Over four years, it hosted influential figures including Michel François, Georges Adéagbo, Ria Pacquée, Luc Deleu, and Guillaume Bijl.

The residency culminated in 2024 with a landmark exhibition at the Maison André Breton, coinciding with the centenary of the first Surrealist Manifesto—an evocative nod to the movement’s history in the village and enduring spirit.

This publication brings together original contributions by the participating artists and writers, alongside a compelling introduction by esteemed art historian and professor John C. Welchman.
