Hij was onder meer een uitvinder, wetenschapper en componist. Daarnaast was hij

kunstenaar; een van de bekendste schilderijen van de wereld, de Mona Lisa, is van zijn

hand. Ook schilderde hij het fresco van het Laatste Avondmaal en het schilderij Maagd op

de rotsen.

Het centrale schilderij in dit boek is een werk van Maerten De Vos, een van de belangrijkste kunstenaars uit het zestiende-eeuwse Antwerpen. Toch was het schilderij amper bekend en werd het nauwelijks onderzocht. Hildegard Van de Velde, conservator van het Snijders&Rockoxhuis, brengt daar met dit boek verandering in.
