Wat doe ik als mensen me
aanspreken tijdens het schilderen?
Hoe blijft mijn schildersezel staan in
harde wind?"
Deze vragen dreven plein air
schilder Titus Meeuws aanvankelijk
vaak terug het atelier in. Daar kon
hij ongestoord schilderen wat hij
buiten gezien had. Maar ongestoord
schilderen blijkt op den duur te
comfortabel. Van tijdsdruk is geen
sprake meer. De zon loopt immers
nooit weg van een schets of een
foto. 'Als de middelen en de situatie
te makkelijk naar eigen hand zijn
te zetten dan wordt mijn schilderij
meestal saai. Het motief moet
bewegen, licht reflecteren.
Ik moet dus naar buiten. Daar word
ik keer op keer verrast door nieuwe
onderwerpen.
Door de veranderingen van de
jaargetijden kan ik talloze malen
terugkeren naar dezelfde plek.'
'What do I take, what can I leave at
home?' What to do when people
start talking to me while I'm
painting? How do I fix my easel in
strong wind?'
These questions initially drove plein
air painter Titus Meeuws back into
his studio. There he could paint
in peace and quiet what he had
observed outside. However, in the
end painting without disturbances
proves to be too comfortable: there
is no longer the pressure of time and
the sun after all never disappears
from a sketch or photograph. '
If the means and the situation
become too easily manipulated my
painting eventually turns out to be
quite boring. The motive must move,
reflect light making it necessary for
me to go out. There in the open I am
constantly surprised by new subjects
time after time. The change of
seasons makes it possible to return
to the same spot countless times
